The Corpus Christi IceRays had four new players when they took the ice Thursday night against San Angelo. Corpus Christi also looked like a new team.
After struggling offensively through their first eight games, the IceRays exploded for a 7-2 win over the Outlaws at Memorial Coliseum. Corpus Christi (2-5-2, 6 points) scored two power-play goals in the first period to help build a 3-1 lead, and never let up, scoring twice more in both the second and third.
Kurt Wickenheiser had two goals and two assists for the IceRays, while Jarret Zukiwsky, one of three players signed Wednesday, finished with two goals and an assist. Corpus Christi goaltender Hugo Hamelin stopped 37 of 39 shots to earn his first win of the season.
"The Wickenheiser line with Layne and Jarret played great," IceRays coach Dale Henry said. "We came out flying and got a couple of power play goals early, something that had been lacking. The guys looked like the came to play a full 60 minutes."
Also signed Wednesday were Layne Roland, who scored 22 goals in 39 games last season for the IceRays, and Ryan Davis, who along with Henry helped Bossier-Shreveport to a third straight Western Professional Hockey League championship last year.
Released on Wedensday were Jeff Cheeseman, Derek McKinlay and Mike DeGurse. Andy Disch was released Thursday to make room for Ian Lampshire.
Wickenheiser, who now has four goals, said the roster moves were for the better.
"When you're losing you've got to make changes," Wickenheiser said. "It's unfortunate we had to let some players go, but it was time to start winning some games."
San Angelo was forced to use both its goalies, Al Rooney and Clint Owen, and dropped to 4-5-0 (8 points).
Roland bungled his first shot after a pass from Wickenheiser just to the left of the crease. Moments later, Davis centered a pass to Matt Sharuga, who was streaking across the slot. Sharuga also couldn't control the puck, and was quickly hounded by San Angelo defenders.
The IceRays continued their attack and struck at 5:13 of the first period when Ryan Prentice knocked scored off a rebound following a shot by Alex Kholomeyev. Rooney's block on Kholomeyev sent the puck straight in the air, and Prentice came swooping in to give the IceRays a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the first, Jaime Hearn and Roger Maxwell, who collided violently earlier in the period as Maxwell took the puck into the Corpus Christi zone, again battled against the boards near the IceRays' bench. Hearn was penalized for roughing, while Maxwell drew a double minor for slashing and unsportsmanlike conduct.
Forty-seconds into the power play, the IceRays took a 2-0 advantage when Kurt Wickenheiser scored on an nearly undefended goal. Jarret Zukiwsky, one of three new players signed Wednesday, skated up to the left of the net, and Rooney followed, falling as he stretched to make the save. But Zukiwsky made a last-second pass to Wickenheiser, who had an open shot with Rooney laying on the ice.
At 17:09 in the first, Corpus Christi went on another power play when San Angelo's Gavin Hodgson was called for roughing. This time it took the IceRays 47 seconds to score, taking a 3-0 lead on Zukiwsky's first goal of the night.
The Outlaws were able to cut into Corpus Christi's lead before the first intermission. With 54 seconds left in the first, Tyler Quiring's seventh goal of the season brought San Angelo to within two, 3-1.
Corpus Christi wasted no time to open the second period scoring, needing just 26 seconds to take a 4-1 lead on Jason Carriere's first goal of the season. The IceRays then weathered two power plays before scoring again at the 16:17 mark on a slap shot by Zukiwsky, his second of the game.
With time running out in the second period, San Angelo beat Hamelin for the second time. Jonathon Bishop's goal with 57 seconds left cut Corpus Christi's lead, 5-2.
The IceRays added to their lead in the third period with goals by Jeff Palueso and on Wickenheiser's second of the night.
