CRAWFORD - When President Bush wants to take a spin around his 1,600-acre ranch in his propane-fueled pickup truck, he won't have to go far to fill it up.
A propane fueling station was installed on the ranch two weeks ago, one of 1,200 such stations in the state.
The project through the Propane Education & Research Council promotes using the alternative fuel, which has 60 percent lower ozone-forming emissions than reformulated gasoline.
'We need to diversify'
"With fuel use, we need to diversify," Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Michael L. Williams said Wednesday in Crawford, where he discussed the ranch truck project with propane industry officials. "It contributes to fueling the state economy. Propane is a home-state fuel."
Texas ranks first in the nation in industrial production of propane - about 7.2 billion gallons, which is 35 percent of the U.S. total, Williams said. Texas has more propane-fueled vehicles, vehicle fleets and propane fueling stations than any other state.
