Isles cross country defeats UT-Pan Am

Women’s, men’s teams record decisive wins over the Broncs for the second straight year

EDINBURG - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams beat Texas-Pan American in dual matches Friday.
   The Islander women's team, led by Bree Wilson, defeated Texas-Pan American 21-38, while the men beat the Broncs 23-33. It was the second time this year both teams have defeated Texas-Pan American in dual meets.
   "It was the hottest day we have run in since our opening meet in Corpus," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We had one of our hardest training days of the year on Tuesday and today had trouble with the heat."
   Wilson covered the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 49 seconds for an 11-second win over Texas-Pan American's Perla Rios-Handy. The victory was Wilson's fifth win in six outings this season.
   Texas-Pan American's Hugo Cervantes won the men's five-mile run, crossing the line in 26:13. A&M-Corpus Christi's Eddie Geis and John Baeza finished second and third, respectively.
   A&M-CC TENNIS: The Islanders' Felice Sanchez and Jessica Martinez claimed the doubles title at the UTSA Fall Invitational.
   The duo defeated UTSA's Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Mayr 8-6 to win the title in flight one competition. Sanchez and Martinez advanced to the finals with an 8-5 win of Allysia Palacios and Vanessa Kelly of St. Edwards.
   The Islanders' other doubles team of Ellian Rohrbacher and C.C.'s Kelli Kukk fell in the first round of flight two competition to UTSA's Eva Soderkvist and Emily Foster 8-3.
   A&M-K VOLLEYBALL: Tarleton State dropped the opening set but came back to win three in a row as the Texanns defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference South Division match.
   The Javelinas took the opener, 30-17, but then dropped 28-30, 28-30, 14-30 decisions.
   A&M-K CROSS COUNTRY: The Javelinas' women finished sixth in the NCAA Division II South Central Region cross country meet.
   The Javelinas had 187 points and was one notch below Abilene Christian, which had 150 points. Lone Star Conference schools Tarleton State and Angelo State were seventh and eighth. The only other LSC entry, Southeastern Oklahoma, was 11th.
   Liz McCumber was the Javelinas' top finisher and she was 17th among the 91 individuials. She had a 23:13.2 time over the 6000-meter course.
