Throwing a fashion 'rules' curve

Plus-size model gives baggy clothing the slip, praises a good manicure

David Pellerin/Caller-Times
Michelle Herrera, 30, says women should get their hair styled regularly and have their nails manicured at least once a month.
Michelle Herrera, 30, was born in Kentucky and has lived in Corpus Christi for two years. A cosmetologist for almost 13 years, Herrera loves spending time with her husband and 15-month-old daughter Sophia. Herrera was recently selected from a local plus-size modeling call to compete in Dallas.

Q: All women should avoid wearing...
A: Rollers and Hawaiian-print muumuus with snap closures. There's no fashion sense in that garment. It was made for house wear, but women have worn it to the mall and grocery store. C'mon on ladies, there are a lot of nice clothes in all shapes, sizes, and prices.

Q: What's the craziest fashion item you ever bought?
A: Feather trimmed house slippers that I bought to match my leopard print robe. I bought them for $5 at Burlington Coat Factory. I wore the outfit together when I was at the hospital about to have my daughter. The nurse said, "I can't believe you dress up to have a baby." I was the talk of the floor, she said.

Michelle Herrera thinks it is important to not let what other people think construct you. She tries to portray a positive self-image.

   Q: Most embarrassing fashion moment:
A: Back when I was 18, I walked out of the church restroom with my skirt caught in my pantyhose. When my aunt saw me, she goes, "Psst, Michelle!" She was laughing so hard in church. My family got a big kick out of that.

Q: Women should follow these tips to feel better about themselves:
A: Women should get hair styled regularly, nails manicured (at least once a month), and makeup applied to match the day (casual, dressy or elegant). Amway's Artistry makeup and Aveda makeup are good to try. Once you feel good about yourself, you don't care about what other people think. Earrings, girdles and push up bras are also a must.

Q: What's the worst fashion advice you've received?
A: When I gained a lot of weight, I was told to dress in looser fitting clothes. It made me look even bigger. Thank God for the plus-size designers who started making more fashionable clothing.

Q: What's your most expensive purchase?
A: I paid $180 six years ago for an evening dress from Dillard's. It was white and sheer on the top with ruffles and black from the bust line down. I was going to sing at a friend's wedding.

Q: How do you keep up with trends?
A: E! Entertainment. You can follow celebrity styles and learn the do's and don'ts of how to dress. I also like watching videos and awards shows on MTV. Mode magazine and hair shows also give me some ideas.

   Q: What's your best bargain?
A: Girlfriend, please! The first place I shop is the bargain racks. My best bargain is a hunter green double-breasted pantsuit with a leopard print collar. It was originally $379, but I paid only $26.98. I bought it during my lunch break at Hecht's (in Kentucky). It fit like a glove and the pants flair out at the bottom.

Q: If you were to publish a book on fashion, what would you call it?
A: "Image Police: The do's and don'ts of self imagery." It's important not to let what other people think construct you. I try to portray a positive self-image. I wear low cut blouses and ladies tell me I look great. I think that skinny, board-thin models will be a thing of the past.

   Q: I can't believe I used to wear:
A: Eighties eye shadow worn horizontally on lids in pink, yellow and blue, and wearing chic and Jordache jeans.
