Business in brief
SECURITY SURGE
Demand for specialized security professionals has increased since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Patrick Cannan, director of corporate relations for Wackenhut Corp., a security-services concern in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., says many clients mainly are looking for more security officers. Because of the demand, Cannan says he could "place 5,000 people if he could find them."
TERRORISM TOLL?
About 117,700 workers at big corporations were laid off last month after Sept. 11, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS says it can't prove a direct correlation.
TELECOMMUTING PITFALLS
E-mail, telephone calls, faxes and instant messages are weak substitutes for showing up at the office, a new survey shows.
Of the 400 managers polled by ITRA Realty Group, a Washington-based organization that represents business tenants, 72 percent agreed that there is no replacement for "face time" for career advancement.
