San Antonio continued its domination over Corpus Christi with a 5-4 shootout win Wednesday night at Memorial Coliseum.
Scott Green and Blair Manning scored on the Iguanas' first two shootout opportunities against IceRays goaltender Hugo Hamelin. San Antonio goaltender Rob Galatiuk denied Matt Sharuga and Jeff Paluseo on Corpus Christi's first two shots to end the game.
The win is San Antonio's third of the season against the IceRays, and improved the Iguanas to 4-2-0 (8 points) in the Central Hockey League Southeast Division. Corpus Christi fell to 1-4-2 (4 points) to remain in fourth place in the division.
"You just kind of go out there and whoever scores gets it," said Sharuga, who scored two goals, the second of which tied the game, 4-4. "You all got a point (in the standings) by that point, regardless. Both teams want to win."
Sharuga scored his second goal of the night at 9:33 of the third period to tie the game at 4-4. Following a scoreless four-minute overtime period, the game went to a shootout.
IceRays coach Dale Henry was confident heading into sudden death, especially after Hamelin's 34-save performance in regulation and the overtime period.
"I thought we'd come out with two points," Henry said. "If you stop the first one, it gives the guys a good feeling. Sharuga just missed, and Paluseo had him beat but couldn't finish it off. It's unfortunate losing in the shootout."
The game was delayed several minutes after the first pause because the arena's halogen lights had not yet returned to full strength following the pregame introductions.

IceRays’ Mike DeGurse plays the puck against San Antonio during the first period at Memorial Coliseum.

Seconds after the ensuing face off, Jonathan DuBois gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead, slipping the puck past Hamelin from behind a crowd that had gathered in front of the net.
Corpus Christi's Matt Sharuga had a chance to tie the game at the five-minute mark when he stole the puck from two defenders in the San Antonio zone. The poke check set Sharuga up with a one-on-one shot on Galatiuk, who defelected the puck away.
Both teams continued to push the puck from zone to zone, but neither could capitalize on scoring opportunities. At 11:21 in the first period, several players from both sides tangled against the boards near the San Antonio bench.
Corpus Christi's Cory Evans was called for roughing, while San Antonio's DuBois received a double minor for spearing, giving the IceRays a man advantage. Twenty-four seconds into the power play, Kholomeyev found the net to even the score, 1-1.
The IceRays' lead didn't last long, as San Antonio scored its own power-play goal at 13:44 on a long slap shot by Ken Richardson.
Corpus Christi kept the game close in the second period and eliminated the one-goal deficit at 5:39 on Kholomeyev's second score of the night.
Less than a minute later, however, Richardson put San Antonio back on top, 3-2, with his second goal of the game.
Again, not a minute had passed when the next goal was scored, this time by Corpus Christi's Sharuga.
The score remained tied until the last minute of the second period when San Antonio's Joe Gray scored with 22 seconds left, giving the Iguanas a 4-3 lead.
