Carroll vandals to face charges

Students are accused of damaging school on last day

By Mary Moreno
Caller-Times

Eight Carroll High School students caught on tape vandalizing the school in a last-day-of-school prank that included spray painting a lamb could be banned from graduation activities, said Principal Scott Thielman.
The students allegedly broke into the school early Thursday and spray painted the walls in the courtyard and the senior wing. The students also cut down two trees and let loose a lamb, a rooster and a duck in the school's courtyard, Thielman said.
"I know graffiti in a school is a state jail felony," he said. "We're still investigating. Once the investigation is complete we're going to file charges."
School officials discovered the damage when they arrived at school Thursday.
The animals were taken from the CCISD agricultural farm behind Cabaniss Field on Saratoga. Thielman said the animals were not hurt.
The remains of the two trees had to be removed from the courtyard. Thielman said the monetary value of the damage wasn't immediately known.
Thielman said that while the students have been identified, he wasn't certain they were seniors. But if they are, they will not be allowed to participate in graduation activities.
Corpus Christi Police Chief Pete Alvarez said he understood the students were seniors. Police were notified of the incident at about 2:45 p.m. when JET officers arrived at the school to patrol.
The graffiti on the walls included references to seniors and 2001, Thielman said.
CCISD police are investigating the incident.
"I was hoping we would be celebrating our baseball team going to the playoffs," Thielman said. "Instead here I am dealing with this issue."
