Blackhawks hire Sutter as their new coach

Brian becomes the second brother behind Darryl to lead the team in nine years

Associated Press

Brian Sutter was hired Thursday as coach of Chicago, his fourth team in 13 years.
"It came clear that in terms of leadership, he was prepared to accept the leadership role of the team as we prepare to rebuild," general manager Mike Smith said.
Sutter, whose brother Darryl coached Chicago from 1992-95, will be the team's sixth coach since 1995.
"It's a sincere pleasure being here and I'm looking forward to the challenge," Sutter said.
The Blackhawks, who've missed the playoffs four straight years, have been searching for a coach since a heart ailment forced Alpo Suhonen out in March after less than one season.
"I knew that if I was going to come back to work, as far as hockey was concerned, this was one tremendous place to come," Sutter said.
Sutter has 10 years experience as an NHL coach with St. Louis, Boston and Calgary. His career record is 360-319-103 and his teams made the playoffs seven times.
Sutter, current Blackhawks assistant Denis Savard, and brothers Brian and Terry Murray were each interviewed for the job. Savard, who with fellow assistant Al MacAdam coached the team's final seven games this season, was expected to be asked to stay as an assistant.
Sutter, one of six brothers involved in hockey, was fired a year ago by Calgary after missing the playoffs all three years with the Flames.
Sutter coached the Blues from 1988-92 and the Bruins from 1992-95. He spent his 12-year playing career with St. Louis.
