Holland's straight-set win boosts A&M-CC over D

Islanders take four of six singles matches in classic

From staff and correspondent reports

IRVINE, Calif. - Jason Holland's straight-set victory helped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 4-3 victory over the University of Denver in the first round of the 22nd Annual Anteater Classic Thursday.
Holland's 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lachlan Menzies at No. 6 singles clinched the match for A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders (11-5) captured four of six singles matches en route to the come-from-behind victory. It marks the second consecutive 4-3 victory over Denver in as many years. The Islanders edged the Pioneers by the same score in the first round of last year's tournament.
"This was a great match right from the start," Islanders coach Steve Moore said. "We have a very competitive group of veterans on this team. They didn't want to come all the way to the West Coast to lose in the first round.
"Jason's match was huge for us," Moore said. "He has put in a lot of effort since he joined the program three years ago."
Stuart Beauchamp, Antoine Quinquis and Tanner Payne rounded out the singles wins for the Islanders. Beauchamp ran his dual match record to 15-1 with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Boris Turkic at the top of the singles lineup. Quinquis posted a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Tomasz Wawrzyniak at No. 2, while Payne took a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over Trevor Young at No. 5.
Denver got off to a fast start by winning two of three doubles matches. Beauchamp and Paul McInerney notched their 10th win of the year in an 8-5 win over Turkic and Wawrzyniak at No. 1 doubles.
The Islanders will play the University of the Pacific in a second-round matchup this morning.

   Hicks named to USBWA
  All-District VII squad

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Michael Hicks has been named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District VII team.
Hicks, a native of Panama City, Panama, capped his stellar two-year collegiate career by averaging 26.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.9 steals per game to lead the Islanders to a 14-14 mark in their second season. His scoring average would have ranked second nationally if not for A&M-Corpus Christi's NCAA Division I provisional status.
"This is quite an honor for Michael to be among this group of talented players," A&M-CC coach Ronnie Arrow said. "Despite the newness of the program, he accomplished so much and helped put Islander men's basketball on the map. It shows the quality of player Michael has been the past two years."
During his two-year career, the forward scored 1,324 points, hauled down 441 rebounds, dished out 148 assists and had 110 steals in his 54 games. He posted 10 or more points in 53 of 54 games and had 13 games of 30 or more points. Hicks also recorded 19 career double-doubles.
Hicks is joined by Brandon Wolfram (UT-El Paso), Jeryl Sasser (SMU), Michael Wilkes (Rice), Chris Owens (Texas), Ronnie McCollum (Centenary), Terry Black (Baylor), Ronald Dupree (LSU), Stan Blackman (Arkansas-Little Rock) and Darren Kelly (Texas) on the all-district team. The team represents schools located in the states of Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Wolfram, a 6'-9" senior, was selected the district's player of the year after posting 22.3 points, 7.6 rebounds per game to lead the Miners to a berth in the NIT. He shot .591 from the floor and .824 from the foul line.
Texas' Rick Barnes was named the coach of the year after guiding the Longhorns to a 25-9 mark and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
