Texas trounces Islanders
’Horns dominate in an 11-5 victory
From staff and correspondent reports
AUSTIN - Omar Quintanilla led an 18-hit attack to lead 22nd-ranked Texas to an 11-5 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, handing the Islanders their eighth straight loss Wednesday night at Disch-Falk Field.
The freshman went 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs and Ryan Hubele registered a 3-for-6 evening with three RBIs as the Longhorns swept the season series from the Islanders. The 18 hits were a season best for Texas.
The Longhorns (21-12) erupted for three runs in the bottom of the first off starter Jeremy Fuller (3-8). The senior gave up all three runs and only lasted two-thirds of an inning. Quintanilla started the five-hit attack with a triple.
Hubele followed with a run-scoring double, and Ben King extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single.
Trailing, 7-3, heading into the top of the sixth, A&M-CC scored twice to cut the deficit to 7-5. Former Carroll High School catcher Jimmy Fly drove in both runs with a bases-loaded single to right. However, the Longhorns put the game away with one run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Texas starter Ryan France (3-2) pitched five innings, surrendering three earned runs en route to claiming the victory. The junior fanned seven batters and gave up six hits. Islander reliever Carlos Garcia pitched admirably in the defeat. The junior threw 115 pitches and gave up three earned runs in six innings of work.
The Islanders got off to a strong start in the first inning France. Michael Shandler extended his hitting streak to 16 with a triple to open the game. Rene Chavez, another former Carroll player, drove him in with a groundout to give the Islanders their only lead of the game, 1-0. Sean Braithwaite then followed with the second triple of the inning, but was stranded at third.
Shandler, Braithwaite, and IWA-ex Brandon Trevino each had two hits a piece in the 10-hit attack.
The Islanders (11-17) will attempt to end their losing streak Saturday when they host St. Edward's at Cabaniss Field at 6 p.m.
