Islanders sit fourth at ORU Invitational behind Perez's 77

From staff and wire reports

BROKEN AROW, Okla. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Alessandra Perez fired a 77 to pace the Islanders in the first round of the Oral Roberts Invitational at the Broken Arrow Golf and Country Club Monday afternoon.
The sophomore from Punta de Mata, Venezuela, will begin today's final round tied for second place with Midland College's Stephanie Smith, one shot behind Nina Reis of North Texas. Only seven shots separate the top 20 players in the field. Perez will be in search of her second tournament title and fifth top 10 effort.
"It was 29 degrees when we started," Islanders coach Ian Freret said. "Everyone was bundled in about eight layers of clothing."
The Islanders sit in fourth place with a score of 330, 10 strokes behind the leaders from North Texas. Lamar is second with 323 and Midland is third at 324.
A&M-Corpus Christi freshman Carrie Braun (Hamilton) fired an 82 and is in a tie for 15th, while Liza Mucheru (Nairobi, Kenya) is in a tie for 19th at 83.
Melissa Newman-Gillespie (Kamloops, British Columbia), who entered the event with three consecutive tournament titles, carded a first-round 88 and is in a tie for 30th.
"The course is a bit tougher than we have played," Freret said. "There are a lot of hazards and the players are a bit tentative on their shots. Despite being 10 behind, we are in a good spot. North Texas is catchable. The good thing is we don't play with them in the final round. They won't know how we are doing."
   Team results - 1. North Texas 320; 2. Lamar 323; 3. Midland College 324; 4. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 330; 5. Northeastern State 337; 6. Idaho State 339; 7. McNeese State 341; 8. Oral Roberts 347; 9. Centenary 360.
Individual - 1. Nina Reis, UNT, 76; 2. (tie) Alessandra Perez, A&M-CC, and Stephanie Smith, MC, 77; 4. Angela Finley, MC, 78; 5. (tie) Tonia Niblette, Lamar, and Lindsey Brown, NE State, 79; 7. (tie) Olaf Maria Jonsdottir, Lamar, Helen Sharp, Lamar, Danielle Miron, NE State, and Heidi Brown, ORU, 80.
