From birdwalks to seminars, spring is busy for birders
The Texas Ornithological Society spring meeting will include guided day field trips and three night programs
Spring is here. The birds and flowers know it. Birders know it by their full calendars. Thanks to the winter work of the Blucher Bunch, Blucher Park is looking beautiful for Spring Bird Walks. Sponsored by the Audubon Outdoor Club, the Walks will take place, starting at sunup, every Saturday and Sunday in April, except Easter Sunday, April 15.
Another big event for birders will be the Texas Ornithological Society spring meeting, to be held here April 26 through 28. The group is dedicated to the observation, study, and conservation of birds. If you are interested in birds you should join by sending a check for $20 to: Membership Services, TOS, PBM 189, 6338 N. New Braunfels Ave., San Antonio, TX, 78209.
Field trips
The spring meeting consists of daily guided field trips to local birding spots, and three night programs. Headquarters will be at Holiday Inn Airport. Field trips will leave from there. Registration and sign up for field trips will also take place there from 2 to 7 p.m. on April 26.
Non-members may also participate for a fee. For more information, call Joel Simon at (361) 241-2617, or Jo Creglow at (361) 241-0422.
Local expert birder Mel Cooksey will speak on "Spring Migration in the Coastal Bend" on April 26 at 7 p.m. His main interests are field identification techniques and population abundance and migration.
Hawk talk
The evening program on April 27 will be "Redhead and Northern Pintail in the Laguna Madre" a research paper to be read by Bart Ballard, a research director at A&M Kingsville.
Joel Simon, coordinator of the full season hawk watch here, will present a talk on hawk migration the last evening of the spring meeting. His presentation will take place during the Saturday night banquet, which begins at 6:30 p.m. on April 28.
To attend the banquet on Saturday, checks for $22 should be made payable to the Audubon Outdoor Club, marked "for TOS meeting," and mailed to P.O. Box 3352, Corpus Christi, TX, 78463.
Phyllis Yochem, a Corpus Christi resident, has studied birds in Texas since 1960.
