IceRays end regular season with a loss

Corpus Christi again falls to Austin team, 6-3

By Victor J. Diaz
Austin American-Statesman

AUSTIN - There wasn't a lot of drama surrounding the actual game played
in the Ice Bats season finale at the Travis County Expo Center.
A four-goal second period gave the Bats their ninth win of the season
against the Corpus Christi IceRays, 6-3, in the fourteenth meeting this season. Six different Bats contributed goals, including the first of the season for Daniel Kletke, who capped Austin's assault of
IceRays goalie Brad Erbsland with a score at 19:17 of the second period to go ahead 6-2.
Brett Seguin assisted on three goals, and finishes the regular season with a league leading total of 73. Dan Price opened the scoring for Austin at 5:58 of the first period and picked up three of his game-high four assists in the second period scoring frenzy.
In Tupelo, Miss., a win by the T-Rex clinched the Eastern division
crown, and set up a first round meeting between the Ice Bats and
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Although the Mudbugs finished ahead of the
Ice Bats in second place, scheduling conflicts with the CenturyTel
Center in Bossier City will switch the site of the first two playoff
games to Austin next Friday and Saturday.
While a 2-3-1-1 format has been discussed with only the sixth game of
the series returning to Austin, one possible scenario could mean all
seven games of the series would have to be held in Austin.
Bossier-Shreveport is the WPHL's two-time defending champion, and beat
the Bats in four of their seven meetings this season. "We can build
momentum here at home and then carry it into their building," said Ice
Bats Coach Brent Hughes. "Getting a good start is the key, so I think it
is a plus that we start here."
Hughes also expects to have another player join the team for the
playoff run. "We've got our eye on an amateur player now we can bring
in. I think there is a department we're lacking in. A lot in the
playoffs is physical play, and grit, and determination and I think we're
missing one of those guys. I think we need to back our hockey team up if
we have an injury or something happens along the line."
The Bats have until Tuesday at noon to finalize their playoff roster,
and should receive news on the days and location of the remainder of the
   series against the Mudbugs tomorrow.
