Teen hit by bat is in coma
Local man arrested, charged with assault
By Venessa Santos-Garza Caller-Times
A teen-age boy was in a coma late Sunday after being hit in the head with a baseball bat, police said.
A 20-year-old Corpus Christi man was arrested in connection with the incident that left the teen with a fractured skull. The man was arrested about 6 p.m. and transported to the Nueces County Jail on charges of aggravated assault. No bond had been set Sunday evening.
Police said 18-year-old Casey Ganschow was playing basketball with friends about 1:30 p.m. at Sands Park near Holly and Rodd Field roads when he was approached by the 20-year-old and four other individuals, each of them carrying bats.
Witnesses told police that Ganschow asked the man why they were carrying the bats and was then struck in the back of the head, said Corpus Christi Police Capt. Richard Lewinski.
The 20-year-old told officers that Ganschow pulled a knife on him but witnesses told officers that no one was carrying a knife.
It was not clear Sunday if the victim and suspect knew each other.
Hospital officials said Ganschow was listed in critical but stable condition. He was in a medically induced coma to help alleviate swelling of his brain.
Police Chief Pete Alvarez said that he hoped Ganschow would recover but the department could request that charges against the 20-year-old be upgraded to murder if he doesn't.
