Pitching helps Texans triumph over Trojans, 3-1

Pitcher Trevino rises to the occasion, picking up 5th win of season while striking out 11 batters

While Moody and Ray played to a 1-1 tie in a preseason district tournament earlier this year, it seemed like both baseball teams were again headed in that direction in Friday night's District 29-5A contest.
But Javier Salinas' clutch eighth-inning double drove in the go-ahead run as Ray downed Moody, 3-1, in eight innings at Cabaniss Field. The victory places the Texans (11-4-2, 3-1) in a four-way tie atop the district with Moody, Carroll and King.
"It meant everything," Salinas said of beating the Trojans. "It boosts our confidence, and now momentum will carry us the rest of the way."
With the game tied at one after the regulation seven innings, Carson Reichert drew a walk and moved to second on an errant pick off attempt. With two out, Salinas stepped to the plate and drove an Isaac Cantu pitch into right-centerfield, driving in Reichert and giving Ray the lead.
"He's been coming on," Ray coach Mario DeLeon said. "He's a clutch hitter and he doesn't mind going the other way. They pitched him outside, and he went with the pitch."
Gilbert Curiel slammed a double off reliever Now Martinez to drive in Salinas and provide an insurance run.
Pitcher Toro Trevino set Moody down in order in the bottom of the inning, clinching the victory.
For the most part, Trevino was untouchable. He struck out the side in the fourth - his only one-two-three inning until the eighth - and fanned 11 overall, walking only two and allowing six hits.
At other times, Trevino (5-0) lived on edge, working out of a bases loaded situation in the first and escaping with runners on the corner and one out in the fifth.
"To be honest, I thrive under pressure," Trevino said. "I don't mind those situations, and my defense played really good behind me. It was a team type of game."
For a while, Trevino was almost a one-man crew. In the first, the first three Moody batters all drilled line shots back up the middle at Trevino. More in self-defense than anything else, the pitcher snagged the first two shots for outs. The third whistled by Trevino's head for an Andrew Casares single.
That eventually led to a bases loaded situation where Trevino induced Cantu into a groundout to the shortstop, ending the threat.
Perhaps psyched up a little, Trevino started the scoring by pounding a two-out second-inning solo shot off Cantu (3-1) which gave the Texans a 1-0 lead.
Moody (14-4-1, 3-1) threatened again in the fifth, placing runners on the corners with just one out. After a quick conference between Trevino and DeLeon, the senior showed poise again. Trevino struck out the next batter, and induced an inning-ending groundout by the following hitter.
"We had chances to score and didn't take advantage of them," Moody coach Steve Castillo said. "That's where it shows up that we're a young team."
Moody finally solved Trevino in the sixth. With runners on the corners and one out, a high chopper from Moody's Isaac Salazar was snared by Art Ruiz at third. Ruiz fired home, but his throw pulled catcher Brandon Franco away from the plate, allowing Pete Lopez to score and tie the game.
But that effort was lost with Salinas' heroics in the last inning. The double also marred a strong outing by Cantu. In his 7í innings of work, Cantu surrendered just three hits and, following Trevino's home run in the second, the Moody pitcher didn't allow another Ray runner to pass beyond first base until the eighth and final inning.
