Teaching veteran Rose Cantu said that her community and school involvement qualify her for a City Council slot. The 44-year-old West Oso teacher of the gifted and talented is running for the District 3 seat on April 7.
"I feel that I am prepared to represent the district with integrity and a sense of community awareness," Cantu said.
The Corpus Christi native is a graduate of Incarnate Word Academy. She has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas. Cantu, who also works in her family's funeral home, received her funeral director/embalmer certification from the Commonwealth College of Sciences in Houston. She is married and has five children.
Cantu said the issues the new City Council will have to consider this term are Packery Channel, public safety, and promoting higher education opportunities.
"I really want to work to improve the quality of life for the youth and senior citizens of our community," she said.
Cantu is among eight candidates making a bid for the District 3 seat in the April 7 election. The other candidates are: Roland Barrera, Joe Louis Burnett, Jose H. Gonzalez, Ray Hernandez, Jesse Noyola, Joe A. Ortiz and Woody Riley.
District 3 runs from Agnes Street to a southern boundary that includes Weber and Everhart roads. The eastern boundary runs along Baldwin Boulevard, Horne Road and McArdle Road. The western boundary is the city limit line from Agnes to Weber.
