Barrera points to civic service in his campaign for District 3 seat
Council must use education to foster business growth, he says
By Venessa Santos-Garza Caller-Times
Roland Barrera said his community involvement and experience in dealing with city government qualify him for the City Council District 3 seat.
"I have been a part of many community-oriented organizations including the Hispanic Contractors Association and the RTA board of directors," Barrera said. "Through those organizations I have had to work very closely with the current City Council."
Barrera, a 34-year-old independent insurance agent, said the council should not only focus on bringing new businesses to Corpus Christi but also on fostering those already here by promoting education.
"We need to reinvest in our community," Barrera said. "Yes, we need to bring new industries to Corpus Christi but we support small business owners by educating our young people. Our most valuable resource is our work force."
Barrera, father of three, is a 1984 graduate of Moody High School.
He also attended Del Mar College.
Barrera is among eight candidates making a bid for the District 3 seat in the April 7 election.
The other candidates are: Joe Louis Burnett, Rose Cantu, Jose H. Gonzalez, Ray Hernandez, Jesse Noyola, Joe A. Ortiz, and Woody Riley.
District 3 runs from Agnes Street to a southern boundary that includes Weber and Everhart roads.
The eastern boundary runs along Baldwin Boulevard, Horne Road and McArdle Road.
The western boundary is the city limit line from Agnes Street to Weber Road.
City Council members receive a yearly salary of $6,000.
