Offer to sell skulls results in charges

Scripps Howard News Service

When Sean Long put an ad in the newspaper offering to sell Native American artifacts, he got an unexpected response.
Two undercover FBI agents had heard that the Madisonville, Ky., man also had human remains for sale. Long offered to sell the agents three human skulls for $900, taking a discount on one of them because it was damaged.
But instead of making the deal, Long was arrested and charged with violating federal laws that protect the remains of Native Americans. On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges.
"I am disgusted by what this man did," said Joe Froman, chief of the Peoria Tribe of the Indians of Oklahoma. "It is a sad statement on the moral affairs of our nation when someone thinks he can buy and sell the sacred remains of anyone's ancestors."
