Newman-Gillespie shares lead at tourney
From staff reports
SHREVEPORT, La. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Melissa Newman-Gillespie fired a first-round 78 to grab a share of the lead Monday at the Centenary Ladies Invitational.
The sophomore heads into today's final round tied for the overall lead along with McNeese State's Tesa Simmons. If Newman-Gillespie wins, it would be her third consecutive individual title; she also won top honors at the Lady Bronc Classic on Feb. 6-7 and also at the Islander Classic on Feb. 19-20.
As a freshman, she enjoyed an 82.9 scoring average, and posted the school's best-ever round of 72. She also had four rounds under 80 and had three Top 10 finishes.
As a team Monday, the Islanders shot a 333, which places them in third place, 11 shots behind first-place Lamar. Oral Roberts is second with 328.
Alessandra Perez and Liza Mucheru each shot 84s on Monday, while Jessica Kinsey shot 87. Freshman Carrie Braun had a 94.
"We got off to a rough start," said Islanders coach Ian Freret. "They have had so much rain the past couple of days. It took a few holes to get used to the greens. It's probably the hardest course we have played all year. However, we have one more round to go. If we finish strong, anything can happen."
