TNRCC, airline industry settle lawsuit over clean air order
Associated Press
DALLAS - A legal dispute that threatened to end a Dallas-Fort Worth area clean-air plan has been settled between an airline industry group and the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission.
It ends a lawsuit filed by the Air Transport Association of America Inc. that sought to block a state plan that would have required airlines to cut 90 percent of smog-causing nitrogen oxides from ground equipment at local airports.
The settlement was reached Thursday.
American, Southwest and Delta agreed with North Texas' four largest airports to voluntarily cut smog-causing emissions. In turn, regulators agreed to repeal an order that made the cuts mandatory.
The airports - Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas Love Field, and Fort Worth's Alliance Airport and Meacham Field - agreed in the settlement to trim more of their own emissions, allowing airlines to make 75 percent cuts instead of 90 percent cuts.
