Three CC boxers advance to semis in second night of state Golden Gloves

From staff and correspondent reports

FORT WORTH - Corpus Christi boxers fared better on the second night at the state Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament, with three fighters advancing to tonight's semifinals.
Tomas Pena at 125 pounds, 132-pounder Michael Rojas and Danny Delgado at 178 advanced with victories Thursday night. They will join 156-pounder Victor Lares and 165-pounder Maurice Chambers in the semis.
"We did OK tonight," Corpus Christi coach Ralph Davila said. "We won three out of four and got five of nine in semis, which is not bad considering we did not bring a full team."
Delgado scored the most impressive victory, winning a unanimous decision against Houston's Victor Gonzales.
"Danny just outboxed him all four rounds," Davila said. "It was good, clean boxing."
Pena scored a unanimous four-round decision over Dallas' Luz Contreras. Rojas won a split decision against Jesus Luna of Midland-Odessa.
"He was the aggressor through the four rounds," Davila said of Pena. "He did what he wanted to do, throw a lot of punches."
Rojas easily won the first two rounds of his bout before tiring late against Luna.
The lone Corpus Christi setback Thursday came in the heavyweight contest. Houston's LaKeith Coleman got off to a torrid start, never allowing Jacob Sanchez to unleash any punches. The referee stopped the contest in the first round.
