WAC honors Carroll grad

Rice freshman named league's golfer of week

From staff and correspondent reports

HOUSTON - Former Carroll High School standout Scott Phillips was named the Golfer of the Week in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Rice golfer becomes the second straight Owl freshman to earn the WAC honor. Ryan Morgan won the award following the first week of action.
Phillips led the Owls to a third-place finish at the Udamon Southwest Classic in Victoria last week. Phillips shot a season-best 70 in the final round to finish with a 2-under-par 214, good for a second-place finish. It was Phillips' first collegiate top-five finish.
Phillips and the Owls return to action on March 17 at the El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Spring, Fla.
Rain washes away twin-bill between Islanders, Lamar
Due to the arrival of expected inclement weather in the Corpus Christi area, Wednesday's doubleheader between Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar has been postponed.
The two-game set will be made up as part of a doubleheader at a later date.
The Islanders (6-5) will return to action, Saturday afternoon as they open a three-game set at New Mexico State.
LSC, Rocky Mountain league consider postseason bowl
KINGSVILLE - Officials from the Lone Star Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference are negotiating to establish a postseason bowl game between teams from the two leagues, league officials said.
The annual event would be held at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan., and would pit the top team from each of the leagues not qualifying for the NCAA Division II postseason playoffs. The game would be sponsored by the Wichita Sports Commission.
Negotiations also are underway to have the game telecast nationally, officials said. The first game would be Dec. 1, and would be held on a similar date each season.
