Gregory-Portland High School's Christy Cortez signed a scholarship agreement Wednesday to play softball at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
A two-time, first-team all-district honoree, the Ladycats' outfielder was a two-time, first-team All-Metro selection by the Caller-Times. She was a second-team All-South Texas pick and a first-teamer a year ago.
Cortez, a four-year starter, finished her senior year with a .380 batting average, hitting .500 in G-P's four postseason games. She also had 23 RBIs.
Cortez selected the Islanders over Sul Ross State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Lutheran.
Premont AD Yzaguirre
takes job in Laredo
Two-year Premont High School football coach and athletics director Henry Yzaguirre has resigned to take an assistant football coaching position at Laredo Nixon.
The Hebbronville native coached the Cowboys to a 7-13 record the last two seasons. In 1988, Yzaguirre coached his alma mater to an 8-3 record, winning the District 31-3A championship.
Yzaguirre was out of town and unavailable for comment. Pedro P. Lopez Jr., the Premont Independent School District superintendent, did not return phone messages Wednesday.
Isles' Hicks returns to Panama for NFL draft
With less than a week until the NBA draft, Michael Hicks has decided to sit back and wait.
Hicks has returned home to Panama City, Panama, after a short workout with the Indiana Pacers, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball coach Ronnie Arrow said.
The draft is scheduled Wednesday in New York.
Arrow said the team showing the most interest in Hicks lately has been Philadelphia.
The 76ers have a 26th-round pick in the first round and the 57th overall pick in the second round.
"I always tell those guys when they call that they would be surprised by how good this kid can be for their team," Arrow said. "I've coached nine guys who have played in the NBA, and Michael is every bit as good as any of them."
Hicks has prepared for draft day by competing in the Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational in March and Chicago pre-draft camp earlier this month.
A 6-foot-5 forward and former member of the Panama National Team, Hicks spent two years with A&M-CC and finished his senior year by scoring 26.7 points and pulling down 7.2 rebounds per game.
