One thing is certain: ’Rays have their man
His name is a mystery, but team will unveil new head coach today
By Javier Becerra Caller-Times
The Corpus Christi IceRays will name a new head coach today, and not even the players know who it will be.
General manager Taylor Hall, who began searching for a successor when he stepped down as coach in May, said last week that he had received about 35 applications for the position.
"I talked to Taylor last Saturday and he said he had a couple of guys in mind," IceRays forward Kurt Wickenheiser said. "With things being pretty slow in the summer, we (the players) weren't exactly sure what was going on."
Hall was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
In a released statement Tuesday, Hall said he is confident that the IceRays have found the right choice.
Though he declined to name the new coach, IceRays director of public relations Mike Modugno said the coach does have ties to Hall going back to junior hockey.
Nearly four months remain before the IceRays begin play in the new Central Hockey League, which Wickenheiser said gives the new coach and players ample time to prepare.
"It's a good time to do it," Wickenheiser said. "We're just coming to the end of June. Taylor had a lot of good coaches approach him, and he needed to find the right one.
"I think he did, even though I don't know who it is," he said. "I'm sure all the players back next season will do their best."
