Riviera’s Hinojosa named to All-State team; Carroll’s Choi commits to TCU
Riviera High School's David Hinojosa was named to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 2A All-State team.
The Seahawks' outfielder batted .533 this past season, earning unanimous Most Valuable Player honors in District 32-2A.
Hinojosa also played for the winning South squad in Sunday's THSCBBA 3A-A All-Star game at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. The South beat the North, 12-2. In the 5A-4A game, the South won, 5-4.
There were 14 players from the Corpus Christi area that were selected in the five classifications by the coaches for all-state honors.
Choi commits to play volleyball at TCCarroll High School junior Jackie Choi has verbally committed to a full scholarship to play volleyball at TCU.
The District 29-5A MVP and All-South Texas first-team pick also ranks fourth in her class of 558.
Choi also has played club volleyball with the Corpus Christi Volleyball Club for the last three years. She joins two other CCVC players - (Calallen's Ashlea Bonds, New Haven, and King's Rhea Skrobarczyk, Virginia Commonwealth) to earn college scholarships.
Former CC swimmers earn postseason kudos
Former Carroll High School swimmer Alison Loveless, now a soophomore at Hartwick College, was named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic Team for the second straight year.
Also, Lauren Scott, a freshman swimmer who graduated from Carroll, and King's Emily Seagrave played key roles in helping the college finish 10th in the nation academically among squads in the AWPCA.
Scott scored four goals and had seven assists for the Hartwick water polo team. Seagrave, a freshman attacker, had four goals and five assists for the team that finished 20-14 and ranked 18th in the final national poll.
Willie's Wolves senior team wins tournament
Willie's Wolves, a Corpus Christi-based senior men's softball team, won the 29th Annual Juneteenth Senior Softball Tournament in Houston.
The team, managed by Willie Ruiz and led by MVP pitcher Dan Esquivel and second baseman Steve Stevens, were 4-0 in the tournament, beating a team called Old Brothers in the finals.
Sparkling City all-stars claim sectional title
The Sparkling City Girls All-Stars fastpitch team won a sectional title last weekend by winning the Pony's South Cost Valley Sectional Tournament in San Benito.
Sparkling City teams won five of the six division team titles, including T-Ball, 8-under, 10-under, 12-under and 14-under.
Local powerlifters win titles in Seguin meet
Powerlifters from the Ironhorse Gym swept the recent South Texas powerlifting championships in Seguin.
Amber Schulze, who attends King High School, won both the 132-pound and Teen divisions with a combined total lift of almost 600 pounds. Jim Steen won the 198-pound men's masters and was second in the 198-pound men's novice class.
Charles Bryant set three state records in the 308-pound men's masters division, lifting a total of more than 1,600 pounds. And John Fowler, reigning WPL world powerlifting champon, won the men's 275-pound class and won the best overall lifter award, thanks in part by an 800-pound squat. He lifted nearly 1,900 pounds in three separate lifts.
