START TALKING
Is your child living in a language-rich environment? You should be able to answer YES to the following questions:
Are you a good model? Experts believe that you should not use baby talk.
Do you tune into your child and follow his lead? Focus on your baby's individual style of communicating with you.
Do you play with sounds? Respond to your baby's verbalizations, mouth movements and hand gestures with imitation.
Do you keep it concrete? Speak clearly and slowly to your child.
Do you recognize and create learning opportunities? Language learning happens all day long.
SUMMER FUN FOR KIDS
Summer. Time for kids to get wet, muddy, bug-bitten and sweaty. But television, Playstation 2 and the Internet are using up more and more of our children's spare time.
Becky Joyce, a therapeutic-recreation specialist with the Shapedown program at Children's Hospital, in Denver, Colo., says outdoor activity should be a top summertime priority for children.
"Outdoor play rejuvenates, refreshes and relaxes children," she said. "It helps them develop gross motor skills. It burns off stress. And when children play games with other children, they learn how to settle their conflicts. Play is a child's work."
ONLY ONE IMPRESSION
The job interview may last all day, but it's in the first 30 seconds that you win the job, a researcher says.
"People do judge books by their covers," said Frank Bernieri, a University of Toledo psychology professor whose research team found that it's all but over after the handshake. "First impressions are going to predict final impressions."
Others disagree. John Adams, owner of a Dale Carnegie franchise, says it is the interviewer who's at fault if the first impression obscures the facts. "I've made many mistakes in my life making quick judgments on people," Adams said. "Once I get to know someone, I think, what's the matter with me?"
