Houston nabs 2004 MLB All-Star game
Associated Press
PITTSBURGH - The 2004 All-Star game has been awarded to Houston, the third time the Astros will play host to it since joining the National League in 1962.
The All-Star game was played at the Astrodome in 1968 and 1986. The 2004 game will be played in Enron Field, keeping a promise commissioner Bud Selig made while lobbying for the new Astros ballpark.
"I love coming to the new ballparks," Selig said Wednesday at the quarterly owners meetings. "When I was down in Houston, I promised that if they could get it built, they would have an All-Star game."
The 2004 game will be the fifth consecutive one in a major league park built since the 1990s.
This year's game will be played July 10 in Seattle, with the 2002 game in Milwaukee's new Miller Park and the 2003 game in Chicago's Comiskey Park. Last year's game was at Turner Field in Atlanta.
"The 2004 All-Star game is a confirmation of Houston's resurgence as one of the country's premier sports cities," Astros owner Drayton McLane said.
The Pirates want to stage an All-Star game at new PNC Park as soon as possible, but Pittsburgh is currently down the list after hosting its last All-Star game only seven years ago.
"This is a very attractive place, but we try to be fair about it," Selig said.
