PORTLAND - For the second consecutive day, play at the Corpus Christi Women's City Golf Championship at Northshore Country Club was postponed due to rain.
Before rains stopped championship flight action on Friday, however, top-seeded Patty Robinson dispatched Amy Autry, a sophomore on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team, and Kristen Lowe defeated defending champion Carol Blackmar to advance into the championship match.
Robinson and Lowe were even through the first six holes before play stopped. They will continue their championship match Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Northshore.
In the other afternoon match, Autry was down two holes to Blackmar. They will continue their match Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team has added two pitchers and an outfielder for next season, the university announced Friday.
All three - pitcher Christopher Barrett, pitcher Barrett Littell and outfielder Travis Whelan - were signed from Yavapai Junior College in Prescott, Ariz.
Barrett was 1-2 with one save last season; Littell was 3-4 and struck out 32 batters in 44.2 innings; and Whelan hit .331 with 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and scored 39 runs.
Whelan could be a possible replacement for Josh Wilson in the Islanders' outfield, coach Hector Salinas said.
"We have some holes in our outfield and I'm counting on Travis to come in and take over one of those spots," Salinas said. "He is a very well-rounded player who can hit for average and power, runs well and plays solid defensively. Travis is a big and strong kid with a highly competitive edge."
KINGSVILLE - Five members of Texas A&M-Kingsville's softball team received first- or second-team awards on the All Lone Star Conference team.
Outfielder Lesley Zambrano, a junior, was a first-team selection. Second-team selections for the Javelinas were pitcher Maria Gutierrez, second baseman Amanda Sustatia, third baseman Amanda Reed and Mariana Casarez.
Catcher Tracy Guadarrama was an honorable mention selection. Also making the honorable mention list was Miller High School graduate Teresa Flores, who is at Texas Woman's University.
