UIL state baseball tournament
Class 5A
Midland 8, Klein 6: Daniel Stovall hit a three run home run and keyed a five-run fifth inning as Midland held off Klein, 8-6, in the UIL state Class 5A semifinals Friday.
Madison Edwards added three hits and two RBIs for Midland.
Midland starter Matt Bose (11-2), who pitched five innings and gave up all six Klein runs, got the victory. Klein starter Brian Hurley (12-2) went the distance and took the loss.
Austin 6, Elkins 5: Austin sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six times in the third inning and held off a seventh inning rally to defeat Elkins 6-5 victory Friday in the second Class 5A semifinal at the UIL state baseball championship.
Austin junior pitcher Matt Goebel (13-1) scattered 10 hits and worked his way out of trouble in the second, fourth and fifth innings. In the seventh, Elkins scored four times, three on a flyball error that would have ended the game.
Class 3A
La Grange 4, Forney 3: La Grange took advantage of a Forney error to score the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning and went on to win 4-3 in the Class 3A UIL state baseball championship game Friday night.
With the score tied at three and two outs in the top of the sixth, La Grange’s Seth Anderle scored on Forney second baseman T.J. Gilmer’s throwing error, and the Leopards took a 4-3 lead.
Class 2A
Weimar 6, Elysian Fields 5: Weimar rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and pitcher Don Levinski had six consecutive outs in a 6-5 win over Elysian Fields in the Class 2A UIL state baseball championship game Friday.
Weimar (26-5) came back from a 5-2 deficit with its rally in the fifth, as Levinski, Casey Berger and Jonathan Hadash had consecutive RBIs to tie the game, 5-5.
