Hetzel comes up big winning seven gold medals at swim meet
Swimmer seizes eight medals overall, qualifies for national championships

Corpus Christi's Tom Hetzel struck gold - again and again - at the 2001 South Central Zone Long Course Masters Championship last weekend in Austin, qualifying the senior swimmer for the national championships in Washington next month.
Hetzel won golds in the 400 IM, the 200 freestyle, the 200 fly, the 800 freestyle, the 200 back, the 200 IM and the 1,500 freestyle. He also won a silver medal in the 200 breastroke.
He also won medals in three relays, the 800 freestyle (gold), the 400 mixed (silver) and the 200 mixed free (silver).
Twenty-six teams and 826 individuals were entered in the meet, which was held at the Circle Ranch Pool. Competitors came from Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
The national championships will be in Tacoma, Wash. from Aug. 10-12.
Local seniors excel at meet
Several area senior athletes fared well at the National Senior Olympics last weekend, held on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
David Middour, 55, won a silver medal in the men's 55-59 pole vault with a jump of 9-4. This was the second time Middour has won a silver at nationals. He won second place in 1997 in Phoenix, and also placed eighth in 1999 in Orlando.
Other local competitors who placed included James Moltz, who was eighth in the 50-54 long jump with a jump of 15-7; and Dr. Amir Hormozi, a business professor at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who won gold in the 50-54 table tennis.
Reggie Garza, 72, participated in the men's 70-74 table tennis but did not place. Also, Malcolm Smith, who is playing on the defending national champion Houston Ballhogs 3-on-3 men's basketball team, continues competition this week.
Javs season tickets on sale
KINGSVILLE - Season tickets for this year's Texas A&M-Kingsville football games have gone on sale at the Javelina Athletic Ticket Office in McCulley Hall on campus.
The deadline for purchasing tickets with the same seat location as last year is Aug. 24. Those buying season tickets this year will secure an option for the same seats in 2002. Box seats are $32, reserved seats in Sections B, C, D and E are $28, and reserved seats in Sections A and F are $20. Single-game tickets are $9 for boxes, $8 for Sections B, C, D and E and $6 for Sections A and F.
The Javelinas will have four home games this season: Sept. 15 vs. Southeastern Oklahoma, Oct. 6 vs. Texas A&M-Commerce, Oct. 27 vs. Eastern New Mexico and Nov. 10 vs. Angelo State.
The Nov. 10 game has a 2 p.m. kickoff; all others begin at 7 p.m.
The ticket office is open from 8:30 am. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Oso Warriors knock out Hidalgo team
The Oso Warriors, a Mustang team of area 9- and 10-year-olds, won the regional championship this past weekend in Harlingen by defeating the Hidalgo All-Stars, the Maya All-Stars (Mexico City) and the Austin-Dripping Springs Tigers.
The Warriors will compete in the South Zone tournament Aug. 1 in Humble, where teams from Texas, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Mexico will compete in the tournament. The winner will advance to the Mustang World Series later this summer in Irving.
Red Stars rise at tournament
The Red Stars, a Southside League Bronco team of local 12-year-olds, beat a Louisiana team in Harlingen last weekend to win the regional tournament.
The team will advance to the Zone Tournament in Tampa, Fla., where they will meet teams from Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas, among others.
The winner will advance to the World Series in California.
