Outside the box

FEBREZE PLOY STINKS
Febreze Clean Wash Laundry Aid promises to get the "phew" out of your laundry, but we're not sure why a good detergent and good technique can't get the same results.
We dutifully poured a capful of the concoction (water, "odor eliminator derived from corn" and fragrance) into a washing machine filled with socks and T-shirts, and inhaled deeply after the rinse cycle. We sniffed and we sniffed, but we simply couldn't tell the difference between a load washed with detergent alone and the Febreze-enhanced one. There are better ways to blow $5.99 than this.
   LIE LOW IN THE HEAT
Pam Emmons

Coastal Bend summers are not made for all-day gardening. Pam Emmons takes the temperature into consideration and creates a light-labor schedule to keep things green and herself cool.
"I water early in the morning to get everything hydrated," she said. "If you wait to do it at night, the water can cause fungus to grow."
Emmons also snips off dead blooms (known as deadheading) every day to help her plants produce new flowers and keep their color. These techniques, she said gives her garden a consistently sunny look while the rest of us feel like wilting.
   KEEP KITCHENS SAFE
Many household accidents are preventable. Here are a few tips for kitchen:

  • Keep knives out of reach.

  • Use childproof locks on all doors.

  • Lock up all cleaning and hazardous materials.

  • Hang mini-blinds near the stove instead of curtains.

  • Replace the oven's exhaust hood filter every three months.
