Twelve students go to national legislative session
Twelve students from Corpus Christi are scheduled to attend the National Hispanic Institute's National Lorenzo De Zavala Youth Legislative Session today through July 22 at De Paul University in Chicago.
The event is a virtual legislative session, during which students discuss and arrive at conclusions about the challenges facing the Hispanic community. This event is designed for sophomores and juniors.
"They learn firsthand how to set up their own government," said National Hispanic Institute project administrator Rene Vela. "They go through the process and start from scratch."
Students attending include: Denise Rodriguez of Moody High School; Heather Crowder, Maribel Cuellar, Jessica Jimenez, Cheryl Mendoza and Angelica Rosales, all of Carroll High School; Sara Garcia, Alicia Soto and Veronica Trevino, all of King High School; and Zackery Gomez, Stephanie Saenz, and Joseph Sanchez, all of Ray High School.
Eleven other students have attended Lorenzo De Zavala Youth Legislative Sessions this summer in New Mexico, Colorado, California and Texas.
Those students are Albert Delgado Jr., Monica Castro and Alana Zamora, all of Carroll; Frankie Arriaga, Johnny Maldonado and Violeta Garcia, all of Ray; Dustin De Leon and Kristina Mendez, both of King; Isabel Saucedo of Miller; Clarissa Esparza of Incarnate Word Academy; and Clarissa Nava of Calallen High School.
