July Fest in Mathis

The City of Mathis is celebrating July Fest Saturday from 1 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. A fund-raiser benefiting Chamber of Commerce projects, the event, held at the chamber grounds at 213 E. San Patricio in Mathis, features live country and Tejano music and a variety of craft and food booths. It's free and open to the public.
   6 years of Tejano Gold
Tejano Gold Countdown, the syndicated radio show that tabulates and plays the top Tejano music hits of the week on stations across the country, is coming up on its sixth year on the air. The show is the brainchild of producer and host Rudy Trevino. Corpus Christi fans may recall the South Texas native from his days as news anchor on KRIS 6 News during the early '80s. Trevino jumped into radio at age 14 at Beeville station KIBL. After a stint in the Navy and then college, Trevino started a career in TV news with KRIS 6 News in 1978.
In 1986 Trevino was hired by ABC/Disney for an anchor position and moved to California, where he worked 14 years. Trevino was nominated for an Emmy for his work at ABC. Now back in South Texas, Trevino works for KGBT-TV4 in Harlingen as news anchor during the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.
Trevino produces Tejano Gold through National Hispanic Syndicated Radio, a production company he created in Los Angeles. Using Billboard, Broadcast Data Services, Radio y Musica and radio station polls, the program tabulates and ranks music by such artists as Mazz, Los Cumbia Kings and Elida Reyna.
The show includes artist interviews and Tejano news spots. Airing at more than 80 stations in areas such as Tucson, Taos, Chicago, Lufkin, Racine and San Francisco, the program broadcasts a format that Trevino calls "quality Tejano." Trevino also offers the programming to Mexican radio stations and around the globe on the Internet.
In the Corpus Christi area, catch Tejano Gold on KSAB-FM/99.9 on Sundays from 8 to 9 a.m. and on KUKA in Alice from 10 to 11 a.m.
   Tejano Roots awards
Incidentally, final preparations are being made for the second annual Tejano Roots Hall of Fame ceremony, scheduled for July 14 at the VFW Hall in Alice.
Tejano Gold's Trevino will share host duties with Marci Mosqueda of KIII's Domingo Show.
The list of this year's inductees is headed by Selena and includes such well known names as Leopoldo Luna, Johnny Herrera, Carmen y Laura, Isidro Lopez, Little Joe, Johnny and Rocky Hernandez and Valerio Longoria.
The other inductees are Armando Pena, Arnaldo Ramirez, Ruben Vela, Donaciano "Chano" Cadena, Rodolfo y Lalo, Rene y Rene and members of Conjunto Bernal, which include Paulino and Eloy Bernal, Manuel Solis, ChaCha Jiminez and Juan Sifuentes.
Ruben Perez, a vocalist from the early days of Conjunto Bernal, who was known by many of his fans as "La Pulga," was added to the list of honorees by a special vote of the board of directors.
Artists scheduled to perform at the ceremony include Little Joe y La Familia, Carlos Guzman, ChaCha y Los Chachos, Isidro Lopez and newcomer Sarah Farias.
