Who: Carlos Vergara
Claim to fame: He co-anchors the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts on KRIS 6 News.
Best recent film: "Frequency" with Dennis Quaid. It's a father-son story that pulls at the heartstrings. It's incredible.
Last book read: "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. I'd read it before years ago, but decided I needed to read it again. Even though a lot of these things are common sense, we have to be reminded that other people are a lot more interesting than ourselves.
CDs in your player: A Rush CD. Rush was one of the only groups that I've ever seen live that you could close your eyes and you'd think it was just a stereo playing really loud. It was the greatest live concert I've ever seen. For three guys that play bass, six-string and drums, they put out some of the greatest music I've ever heard.
Favorite John Denver song: "Sunshine On My Shoulders." It's down to earth and I love it.
SHAKEY SCULPTURE
The much-anticipated "Orion's Belt" sculpture by Robert Perless, to be installed near I-37 and Shoreline Boulevard, is still months away. The current schedule calls for the $200,000 project to be completed in October or November, and for construction on the sculpture's base to begin sometime this month.
The base was to have been install in May, but the structural engineer who came up with its design didn't take into account the type of soil it would be installed in, and plans had to be redrawn. The base needs to be strong enough to allow the three 50-foot stainless-steel vanes mounted on 20-foot columns to endure winds of up to 90 miles per hour and three-second gusts of up to 120 miles per hour.
LEE INKS AGAIN
Legendary writer/editor Stan Lee created or co-created Spider-Man, X-Men, Hulk and most of Marvel's major characters in the '60s. But what if he dreamed up the major characters of that other company - DC Comics, which owns Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Justice League?
That's the premise behind one wild ride beginning this month with "Just Imagine Stan Lee With Joe Kubert Creating Batman" (DC Comics, shipping July 4, $5.95). This 48-page one-shot features Lee's take on the Dark Knight.
"Just Imagine ... Batman" will be followed later this year by Lee's versions of other DC characters.
WEB SITE OF THE DAY
www.almostelvis.com
Dedicated to the film "Almost Elvis," a documentary that chronicles the lives of impersonators across the globe, the site hints at the tantalizing tales told in the movie while offering visitors the chance to order the video. By the estimates of the film's makers, over 35,000 people have portrayed Elvis. Included in the video are tips on getting an Elvis-style nose job and dance moves every imitator should know.
