Bears sink Pirates in 30-3A matchup
Senior Gonzales leads West Oso with 31 points in 85-66 victory

SINTON - With three teams ranked among the top four squads in Region IV-3A calling District 30-3A home, Sinton High School coach Ed Glendening calls the conference "a Cadillac district.''
Tuesday night, West Oso again proved itself worthy of sitting in the driver's seat.
With senior Richard Gonzales paving the way with a 31-point night, the Bears rolled merrily along past the Pirates in an 85-66 victory that really wasn't as close as the 19-point margin.
"We don't have the great player this year,'' Glendening said. "We have 10 very good players and 10 very good kids. But we don't have that Rolls Royce.''
That luxury is parked inside West Oso's garage. The 6-foot-2 Gonzales paced the Bears to their 24th victory in 27 outings and to their 10-0 record in 30-3A. Gonzales added eight steals, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots.
"Richard Gonzales, he's lucky because he hustles and I mean that in a good way,'' Glendening said. "He just outhustles everybody on the floor. We're in fourth gear and it's like he's in sixth gear.''
Nearly everything went the way of the Bears in this rag-tag, up-and-down-the-floor contest that was loosely called. West Oso, the top-ranked team in the region ahead of Gonzales and 30-3A cohorts Aransas Pass and Sinton, got off to a torrid start, making 12 of its first 15 shots. That helped the Bears build a 29-17 lead after the first quarter.
"We've had this experience before. We know what it's like when you go somewhere else,'' said West Oso coach Floyd Campbell, whose Bears reached the 3A semifinals last season. "It wasn't the best-officiated game I've ever seen, but it's a win.''
Sinton (7-3, 18-9) made a brief run midway through the second quarter, cutting the Bears' advantage to 36-31 thanks to three 3-point goals from Kyle Kauk. But West Oso rebooted the lead to 10 at the break on Willie Williams' 3-pointer with a seconds before halftime.
With Gonzales and 6-4 sophomore Cameron Teague providing the impetus, the Bears slammed the door on the Pirates with a 10-0 to close the third quarter. That sent West Oso into the final eight minutes with a 64-46 lead.
And the Bears did all this with a thin lineup. They were without guards Lydell Anthony and Armando Valdez, who are battling injuries.
"We're kind of banged up and hurt, so I think we're doing pretty good with what we've got,'' Campbell said.
The Bears' lead grew to as much as 29 (85-56) after Chris Williams sank a free throw before they emptied most of their bench. By then, the matter was moot. West Oso finished by making 61 percent of its shots, and also connected on 18 of 26 free-throw chances.
To use Glendening's vernacular, Sinton hardly played like an Edsel. The Pirates made 53 percent of their shots, paced by David Standlee's 19-point night and Kauk's 11. But of their 10 free-throw chances, they made but three.
Willie Williams added 17 points for the Bears, Teague finished with 13 and Chris Williams and Jimmy Fling each scored 11.
