Foul trouble hinders Hicks in loss
Islanders’ top scorer sees limited court time after three first-half whistles
By Matt Young Caller-Times
SHREVEPORT, La. - Michael Hicks is usually praised for his aggressive style of play, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's leading scorer's aggressiveness got him in trouble in the Islanders' 82-80 loss to Centenary on Saturday at the Gold Dome.
Hicks, who came into the game averaging 26.7 points per game, scored a season-low 10 points in just 17 minutes. After picking up three fouls in the first half, Hicks, the nation's second leading scorer, was limited to three minutes in the second half because of quick fouls. The 6-foot-5 forward picked up his fourth foul at 19:05 in the second half, which sent him to the bench for the next 13 minutes. After checking back in late in the game, Hicks fouled out with 3:45 remaining. Two of Hicks' five fouls came on attempted charges, when Hicks could have backed off.
"Back off? Why do I have to back off?," Hicks said. "If I see a charge, I should try to take it. But, I guess that's life on the road. The calls aren't always going to go your way."
In Hicks' absence, A&M-Corpus Christi got a big lift from Damian Kirkaldy, who tied a career-high with 21 points.
"It was tough in there without Mike, because he's our go-to guy," Kirkaldy said. "I know the refs are just doing their jobs, but Mike's the No. 2 scorer in the nation, and I think he deserves more respect than he was getting on the court."
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED IN THE HOUSE: A&M-Corpus Christi and Centenary aren't big-time programs, but they got a taste of the big time Saturday.
Sports Illustrated sent writer Mike McKenzie to the game to write something about the matchup between the nation's top two leading scorers. McKenzie spent about 30 minutes with Hicks when the Islanders got into town Friday night and spent some time Saturday morning with McCollum.
The story is expected to run in the college basketball notes section of the magazine.
HECKLER HAULED OFF: A Centenary fan became so upset with the officiating early in the game that he started stalking the sidelines following one of the officials as he ran up and down the court.
After a few trips back and forth on the sidelines, the official finally had enough and called for a security guard to escort the fan out of the building.
