A&M-CC women face Centenary

Lady Gents have gone 0-46 since establishing team 2 years ago

SHREVEPORT, La. - Having lost five of its last seven games, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball game is looking for a cure to what ails it. The Islanders should find a perfect cure when it runs into Centenary at 1 p.m. today.
Teams have been getting well in a hurry against Centenary the past two seasons. The Ladies have never won a game in their two-year history. In fact, the Ladies have never come close to winning a game. Centenary, which went 0-28 last season, has been blown out in nearly all of its 18 losses this season, being outscored by an average of more than 35 points per game this season. Of course, that average is a bit inflated when the 135-37 loss at Texas is thrown into the mix.
Despite Centenary's woes, A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes is still a coach, and she will always have some concerns before a game, no matter the opponent.
"I think there are two things that could be detrimental for us in this game," Estes said. "One thing is if we go into the game overconfident, and with the way we've been playing lately, I really can't see that happening. The other worry is that we'll go in there afraid the team that has never won a game will actually beat us. We have to guard against both of those - overconfidence and underconfidence."
Having lost five of their last seven games, the Islanders shouldn't be overconfident. A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off back-to-back road losses at Troy State and Belmont. Since those losses, the Islanders have had an entire week to prepare for today's game.
"This week of practice has really been good for us," Estes said. "Sometimes when you lose, you come out and you don't want to work, but the players have worked hard all week. I think this week has been really good and helped us get our focus back."
No matter what the Islanders problems have been lately, they don't compare to what Centenary has had to face. A&M-Corpus Christi and Centenary started their basketball programs at the same time. The Islanders are 23-23 since their inception, while Centenary is 0-46.
"We've had some tough losses, but we can look at a team like Centenary that had the same start and everything as us and compare ourselves to them," Estes said. "It should make us feel better about ourselves that we're both second-year programs and look where we are and they haven't won a game yet."
While they're both second-year programs, Estes hopes her team doesn't try to play down to Centenary's level of competition.
"It's easy to get into playing someone else's style of basketball, and we have to avoid against that," Estes said. "If we play down to their level, which is a sloppy game and a turnover fest, then that will probably be bad for us, because that's how they're used to playing."
