Javelinas squads make rare home stand
A&M-K teams to host Angelo State Thursday, Abiline Christian Saturday

KINGSVILLE - After lengthy road trips, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's basketball teams will be home for a brief stand this weekend, hosting Angelo State Thursday night and Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference South Division games.
The women's game will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and the men will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's games will see the women playing at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.
The TAMUK men haven't play at home since Jan. 4 and the women's last appearance in the Steinke Center was Jan. 6.
The Javelina and Angelo State women will be battling for first place in the LSC South Division.
The Javelinas are off to a 4-0 start while Angelo State is 2-0. One of ASU's victories came over West Texas A&M, the team picked to take the South Division championship.
The Javelinas and Rambelles are the only teams in the South Division without a league loss.
TAMUK is 17-2 for the year and has won 15 in a row since losing to Southwest Texas State Nov. 20. The team is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.
Angelo State is 10-4 overall and has won six of its last seven games.
The Javelinas are led in scoring by center Precious Thibodeaux, who hits 17.4 points a game and is fourth in the LSC. Forward Pat Lewandowski, who is seventh on the conference scoring chart, is averaging 16.8 and guard Lorie Martinez is hitting 14.6.
Thibodeaux also leads the rebounding with an 8.9 average and she is fourth in the LSC, and freshman center Arie Wilson is averaging 6.8 and ranks 13th in the conference.
Lewandowski leads the LSC in steals with 3.11 a game and Martinez is fourth with 2.68. Martinez is the leading three-point shooter in the conference with 3.26 a game and Lewandowski is fourth with 2.16.
Angelo State's offense is led by guard Kylie Nabors, who scores 15.3 a game and leads the conference at the free-throw line with an .873 percentage.. Marloes Roetgerink, 6-3 center from the Netherlands, is averaging 10.6.
Forward Esponosha Gilliam leads the Rambelle rebounding with 8.6 a game.
Kelli Ann Goble, 5-5 freshman guard, has the best three-point percentage in the conference at .460.
The Javelinas are tops in the LSC in scoring offense (81.1), scoring margin (+17.8), field goal percentage defense (.359), three-point field goal percentage defense (.288), assists (17.95), steals (13.26), assist/turnover ratio (0.99) and three-point goals made (7.79).
Angelo State leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.426), rebounding defense (32.1), rebounding margin (+7.1) and defensive rebounds (27.36).
The Javelina men will be trying to snap a four-game losing streak as they host the Rams.
The Javs are 6-10 overall and 0-2 in the LSC South. Angelo State is 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Rams are tied with Texas A&M-Commerce for the South Division lead.
Guard Billy Brewster is leading the Javelinas in scoring and rebounding. He averages 14.4 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. Guard Darren Herrington averages 12.3 points a game and center James Smith has a 10.4 average.
The Rams, who have won eight of their last 10 games, are led in scoring by guard James Gray, who hits 18.2 a game. Guard Darwin Carter averages 15.8, forward Tyree Williams 15.3 and guard Justin Hardin 12.3.
Williams tops the rebounding with a 7.4 average.
Angelo leads the conference in steals (15.13), turnover margin
(+10.44) and offensive rebounds (18.13).
Javelina Chris Johnson leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio (2.11) and teammate Brewster is the leader in offensive rebounds with a 4.44 average. Brewster is second in the LSC in field-goal percentage (.622) and ASU's Gray is second in steals (2.94).
The Javelina men and women will be back on the road next week for games at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. They then come home for four-game stands that will close out the season in the Steinke Center.
