Islanders' victory brings halt To Winthrop's home streak

By Matt Young
Caller-Times

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 67-64 win over Winthrop, snapped the ninth-longest home winning streak in the nation.
Before the Islanders' win, Winthrop had won 16 straight home games with its last loss coming more than a year ago.
"What was that winning streak down here?" A&M-Corpus Christi coach Ronnie Arrow said. "It was a long one, and we broke it, so someone needs to call ESPN so they can put us on Sportscenter or something."
The win made the Islanders feel a little bit better about breaking even on this road trip after a controversial overtime loss at Belmont on Saturday.
"Any time you go on the road, it's a good feeling," Arrow said. "We're going home 1-1 on this trip, but we should be 2-0 really. In our minds, we're going home 2-0 for whatever that's worth."
HICKS WATCH: Michael Hicks scored a game-best 28 points, which was just enough to nudge him into the lead as the nation's top scorer at 26.8 points per game.
Centenary's Ronnie McCollum had taken the lead at 26.7 per game after putting up 35 points against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, but Hicks topped him with his performance Monday.
Hicks' stats don't officially count because the Islanders are under provisional status as a second-year program.
SHORTHANDED: Winthrop is shooting for its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, but it will have to get there without the help of last year's leading scorer and rebounder Greg Lewis.
The 6-foot-6 forward, who averaged 15.7 points and 6.7 rebounds a game last season, is out for the year with a ligament injury in his right foot. Lewis led the Eagles into the NCAA Tournament last season when he was named the MVP of the Big South conference tournament.
