Carroll, Ray students land on writers’ third team, honorable mention
Five Tigers earn spots on the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State team

As was the case all football season, Carroll and Ray high schools were at the top of District 29-5A when the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 5A all-state team was released Saturday night.
Carroll, which took the district championship, placed five players on the team, including offensive guard Ryan Hatton and running back Johnny Smith, both of whom were third-team members.
Ray, runners-up to the Tigers in the district, had four representatives on the all-state team, with Richard Recio getting the nod as a third-team defensive lineman.
The only other 29-5A representative was San Benito tight end Caleb Stone, a second-team choice.
Carroll's honorable mention selections were cornerback Ted Barnhart, defensive lineman Chris Gray, and linebacker Alex Hall. The Texans placed linebacker Haskell Hudgens, cornerback Robert Martinez and offensive guard Adrian San Miguel on the honorable mention.

Midland Lee's Cedric Benson, who led his team to the Division I state title with 2,871 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, earned Offensive Player of the Year honors. His coach, John Parchman, claimed the Coach of the Year award. Conroe The Woodlands linebacker Mike Kipper, who corralled 193 tackles, earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades.
While Smith gained attention for his 2,000 rushing yards this season, Carroll coach Terry Morris felt that Hatton, who was named to the first team on the Caller-Times All-Metro and All-South Texas squads, was just as deserving of statewide recognition.
"The kid that jumps out at me the most is Ryan Hatton," Morris said. "He had a fantastic year not only in terms of performance, but in how he went around in terms of his assignments and enthusiasm. It was a big turnaround in his work ethic from his junior year."

While Hatton would pull and wipe out opposition from his guard spot, Smith, the All-Metro Player of the Year and an All-South Texas first-teamer, followed the blocking, out-raced defenses and broke tackles en route to a 2,094-yard rushing season.
"Of course, Johnny got the carries and he's such a tough kid," Morris said. "It's good to see him have his day."
Also having his day was Recio, an All-Metro first team choice. From his defensive tackle position, he hauled down ball carriers 65 times, recorded four sacks, 10 quarterback pressures and forced four fumbles.
San Miguel, an All-Metro first team pick, thrived in Ray's run-oriented offense as a quick pulling guard that was able to mix it up inside. Hudgens, a first-team selection on both All-Metro and All-South Texas, was the heart of the Texans defense, grabbing up 104 tackles, three forced fumbles, four recoveries and two interceptions. Martinez, first team All-Metro, had five picks and two passes defended, despite facing quarterbacks that were wary of throwing in his direction.

Despite being hindered for most of the season with a sprained ankle, Hall, a first team choice on both All-Metro and All-South Texas, had 97 tackles, six for loss, a sack and a 57-yard interception return for touchdown in a 7-6 playoff victory over Donna. Described by Morris as his most-consistent player, Gray, another first-team member of All-Metro and All-South Texas, made 57 tackles, four of which were for loss, from his defensive tackle position.
Barnhart, the only junior in the senior-dominated local contingent, was a first team All-Metro choice. He recorded 81 tackles, six for loss, and an incredible 13 passes broken up. Barnhart was also an entertaining return man, averaging over 11 yard per punt return and over 20 per kick return.
