A&M-CC women look to sweep final 8 games

Islanders’ quest for 17-win season begins today against Belmont’s balanced offensive attack

By Matt Young
Caller-Times

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team's expectations were so high going into this season that the players decided 18 wins would be a reasonable goal for their second season.
With eight games still remaining, that goal is already out of reach. At 9-10 on the season, the best the Islanders can hope for is 17 wins. A&M-Corpus Christi begins its quest for 17 wins with a game at Belmont at 2 p.m. today.
The Islanders' goal was shot out of the water when they suffered a surprising 71-65 loss at Troy State on Thursday. A&M-Corpus Christi beat Troy State by 27 points last season.
A&M-Corpus Christi shot poorly from everywhere on the court in the loss. The Islanders shot just 36 percent from the floor, including 2 of 14 from the 3-point line. They also managed to make just 11 of their 23 free-throw attempts.
"We shot poorly, no doubt about it," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "You're not going to win on the road when you shoot like that."
A&M-Corpus Christi will have to shoot much better to compete against Belmont. Although the Bruins are just 6-9, they have hung close with some tough competition, including taking Mississippi to overtime and losing by three to Alabama.
"(Belmont) is a team that plays really well at home," Estes said. "Belmont is not a team that beats itself. This is a very disciplined team with a solid nucleus from last year's team."
Belmont has a balanced offense with four players averaging double figures in scoring. Included in that scoring barrage is Belmont's starting guard trio of Natalie Brown, Candice Mitchell and Stacie White, who average 12.7, 10.5 and 10 points per game, respectively. While the three guards look to score from the outside, the Bruins are anchored by 6-foot-2 center Chasity Campbell , who is averaging 12.1 points per game.
Belmont focuses its offense on its guards, while A&M-Corpus Christi will look to pound the ball inside. Post players Kristin Rogers, Detra Johnson and Jean Clark are all averaging double figures in points this season.
