Sports writers name five Calallen players to all-state
Gregory-Portland comes in second in Class 4A honors

Calallen High School led South Texas by placing five players on the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A all-state team.
Defensive lineman Josh Brumfield and running back Jessie Pavelka were named to the second team, while David Monroe cinched third team honors as a tight end. Running back Matt Bode and offensive lineman Matt Myers claimed honorable mention status, and Monroe was also placed on honorable mention for his play as a defensive lineman.
Gregory-Portland was next, with three honorable mention selections. Center Jude Gonzalez, linebacker Fred Vela and defensive linemen Eric Wooten were all chosen as all-state honorees.
Beeville running back Spencer Chaisson and Rockport-Fulton quarterback Randy Key rounded out the local contingent as honorable mention picks.
Frenship quarterback Kendal Briles earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades and Ennis linebacker Rodney Birdow was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Coach of the Year honors were shared in a three-way tie between Denton Ryan's Joey Florence, Ennis' Sam Harrell and Ross Rogers of Harker Heights.
Brumfield, a first-team choice on both the Caller-Times All-Metro and All-South Texas teams, gained distinction as the District 31-4A Defensive Player of the Year. Among his best performances was a 12-tackle showing in the state quarterfinal victory over R-F.
Pavelka, a bruising runner, bulldozed his way to 1,993 yards and 26 touchdowns, while sharing carries with Bode. Pavelka earned 31-4A Offensive Player of the Year honors and was a first-team pick on both the All-Metro and All-South Texas team. He was the All-Metro Offensive Player of the Year.
Monroe stood out as a strong blocking tight end for the Wildcats and a run-stuffing nose guard. Bode managed 1,322 rushing yards despite missing a pair of games due to injury. Myers, a 6-3, 260 pound offensive tackle, paved the way for a Calallen offense that nearly racked up 400 yards per game.
Gonzalez, at 6-0, 230 pounds, moved opponents with ease, and had strong showings against such powers as Calallen, Carroll and Floresville. Vela, named the All-Metro Defensive Player of the Year, made 146 tackles, forced four fumbles, recovered three and had four sacks. Wooten had 32 tackles, four sacks and two fumbles caused and recovered and a defensive touchdown.
Chaisson rushed for 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns and was an All-South Texas pick. Key engineered the Pirates Wishbone offense to perfection, running for 19 touchdowns and throwing for 15.
