CCISD to host Gulf Coast Girls Soccer Classic
Regional qualifiers S.A. Clark, Gregory-Portland among 16-team field

Regional high school qualifiers San Antonio Clark and Gregory-Portland head the 16-team field that will compete at the CCISD Gulf Coast Girls Soccer Classic, which begins today at the Pop Warner football fields at the Bill Witt Complex and at Moody's football field.
The sites were changed from the soccer fields at Bill Witt because of standing water from the recent rains.
Clark and G-P are among the seven schools that reached the playoffs a year ago. The Cougars, defending champions in District 26-5A, fell in the Region IV-5A final to city rival Churchill. Winners of 31-4A a year ago, the 30-4A Lady Wildcats made it to the regional semifinals a year ago before bowing to Belton in a shootout.
Two other defending district champs - Carroll and Beeville - and playoff representatives Clear Lake, Edinburg North and Ray also are in the field.
Other teams scheduled to compete are Calallen, Edinburg, Killeen, King, Miller, Moody, Rockport-Fulton and San Antonio Lee.
The 16 teams are bracketed in pools of four, with each team playing three times. The winners of the pool play advance to the first-flight semifinals that take place Saturday.
The second-, third- and fourth-place finishers are grouped into separate flights and also will play Saturday.
The first-flight championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Cabaniss Soccer Field.

Pool 2 - 9 a.m.: Clear Lake vs. Edinburg North, Pop Warner; Calallen vs. Miller, Moody. 11 a.m.: Lake vs. Calallen, Pop Warner; North vs. Miller, Pop Warner. 1 p.m.: Lake vs. Miller, Pop Warner; North vs. Calallen, Pop Warner.
Pool 3 - 10 a.m.: Carroll vs. Clear Creek, Pop Warner; King vs. Rockport-Fulton, Pop Warner. Noon: Carroll vs. King, Pop Warner; Creek vs. R-F, Moody. 2 p.m.: Creek vs. King, Pop Warner; Carroll vs. R-F, Moody.
Pool 4 - 10 a.m.: Gregory-Portland vs. Ray, Pop Warner; S.A. Lee vs. Beeville, Moody. Noon: G-P vs. Lee, Pop Warner; Ray vs. Beeville, Pop Warner. 2 p.m.: G-P vs. Beeville, Pop Warner; Ray vs. Lee, Pop Warner.
Saturday's Games
Flight play begins at 9 and 10:30 a.m. at Bill Witt. Flight 1 championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Cabaniss Soccer Field.
