Islanders fall to hot-shooting Troy St.

Johnson paces A&M-CC women with 22 points in 71-65 loss to Trojans

From staff reports

TROY, Ala. - The Troy State women's basketball team likes to run a quick offense and shoot a lot of 3-pointers, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi favors a more post-oriented game. On Thursday, the Islanders tried to copy the Lady Trojans' style, and the experiment failed miserably.
In a drastic reversal of fortunes, Troy State took out A&M-Corpus Christi 71-65 at Trojan Arena. Only a year ago, the Islanders whipped Troy State by 27 points to earn the first win in the program's history.
"Coming into the game, I thought this should have been a 'W,' but you're not going to beat anyone on the road if you play into their hands the way we did," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "Troy State did a great job of getting us into their game. We played like Troy State, and we're not very good at that style."
Troy State (7-7) was led by Jennifer McInnis' 15 points.
Detra Johnson led the way for the Islanders (9-10) with 22 points, while the rest of her teammates had trouble getting any shots to fall. A&M-Corpus Christi shot just 35 percent from the field, including shooting 2 of 14 from the 3-point line.
"We shot a lot of 3's, and we didn't show any discipline on offense," Estes said. "If we're shooting 14 percent from the 3-point line, there's probably a reason why they're letting us keep shooting that shot."
Even with the poor offensive performance, A&M-Corpus Christi looked like it would still find a way to walk away with the win. The Islanders led for most of the game and had a 58-50 lead with 6:30 left in the game. Troy State went on to outscore A&M-Corpus Christi 21-7 down the stretch, hitting three 3-pointers and making six of eight free throws to hold off the Islanders.
While Troy State made its key free throws, the Islanders struggled from the line, making just 11 of 23 attempts.
"Shooting 11 of 23 from the line gives you absolutely no shot to win on the road," Estes said.
A&M-Corpus Christi's next game is at Belmont at 2 p.m. Saturday.
