Isles need streak to reach goal

Team is sitting at 9-9, with only 9 games left

By Matt Young
Caller-Times

If the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team is going to reach its goal of an 18-win season, it's going to have to do something it hasn't done all season - put together a substantial winning streak.
To put it succinctly, the Islanders, who are 9-9 with nine games remaining, have to win out to reach their goal. The Islanders, a team that hasn't put together a winning streak longer than two games all season, must win their last nine, starting with today's game at Troy State, to reach their goal.
"Our goal is 18 wins, and we're sticking by that," A&M-Corpus Christi center Jean Clark said. "We know it's not going to be easy."
A&M-Corpus Christi's goal will be severely tested as it ventures out on a four-game road trip. After today's game at Troy State, the Islanders play at Belmont, Centenary and Sam Houston State.
"This is going to be a tough road trip for two reasons - Troy State and Belmont are going to be very tough competition, and then also the traveling will be rough," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "It's important for us to win these games if we are going to reach our team goals set at the beginning of the year."
The Islanders are coming off a 68-58 win over Texas-Pan American on Saturday, which they hope will give them some confidence heading on the road.
"We really need some confidence going down the stretch, so hopefully that win will give us a little boost," Estes said. "We did some good things in that win. Now we need to feed off that and put together a run to finish the season."
Troy State appears to be a likely candidate for the Islanders' second straight win. A&M-Corpus Christi collected its first win in the program's history against the team when it blew out Troy State 85-58 last season. The Lady Trojans have six wins this season, but are coming off a 91-62 thrashing at the hands of Florida Atlantic.
Troy State's biggest threat will come inside the paint, where it starts 6-foot-2 Lauren Peckham at forward and 6-3 Thea Herring at center. Herring leads the team in scoring with 11.2 points per game.
The Islanders will counter with a pair of 6-2 post players - Kristin Rogers and Jean Clark, who are averaging 13.2 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.
"Troy State has a big lineup, so rebounding is going to be extremely important in this game," Estes said. "This is a team we beat last year in Corpus Christi, but I think they'll be very tough to beat at home."
