'Revenge' games have been sweet for Islanders this season
By Mark Zuckerman Caller-Times
Based on the way Texas A&M-Corpus Christi looked Monday night in its 107-78 whitewashing of Albany, it might be hard for some to believe the Islanders lost to this same team a year ago.
Then again, A&M-Corpus Christi's about-face against the Great Danes should have come as no surprise, because over the last two years the Islanders have made a habit out of beating teams they had previously lost to.
This latest win over Albany was A&M-Corpus Christi's eighth out of 10 in "revenge" games, definitively closing the door on last year's shocking 90-75 loss to the Great Danes in upstate New York.
"After we blew them out by so much, it's hard to believe we lost to them," Islanders senior Lee Denmon said.
Considering their record in revenge games, the win shouldn't have been hard to believe. In the last two years, A&M-Corpus Christi has lost games to Texas-San Antonio, Montana State, Stony Brook, Belmont, Texas-Pan American, Texas Tech, Portland State and now Albany and come back to beat all of them.
The only opponents to sweep two straight games from the Islanders were Portland and Valparaiso. A&M-Corpus Christi gets one more chance at a revenge game Feb. 5 at Cleveland State, which won 81-77 at Memorial Coliseum two weeks ago.
HICKS KEEPS PACE: The way he's been playing lately, Michael Hicks' 27 points Monday night might seem like an off-night for the senior forward. But when you consider he scored those 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting and played just 25 minutes, the performances is all the more impressive.
With A&M-Corpus Christi well ahead of Albany all night, Hicks was given some rare bench time. Once he picked up his 27th point-allowing him to keep his 26.6-point-per-game average intact-the Islander coaching staff took Hicks out for good with 6 minutes left in the game.
WALK-ONS GET TO RUN: The blowout victory also gave A&M-Corpus Christi's two walk-ons a chance to get some playing time. Guards Rodney Orta and Rusty Pitre each saw 2 minutes of action down the stretch, though neither one got a shot attempt off.
Orta had appeared once before, in the season-opener against Sul Ross State. Pitre made his collegiate debut Monday.
