IceRays fall to Ice Bats in shootout, 3-2

McMullen starts again as Smart scores 2 for Austin

By By Jason Cohen
Austin American-Statesman

Bryan McMullen needed action. The Corpus Christi IceRays were happy to oblige.
The Ice Bats sneaked by Corpus Christi in a shootout Saturday, 3-2. Kelly Smart had two goals, including the overtime winner.
Austin (27-10-3, 57 points) opens up a four point lead over Tupelo for first place in the WPHL East. Corpus Christi (21-19-2, 44 points) is fifth.
McMullen was making his second straight start after a long period of rest, first because of injury, then because the Houston Aeros called him up. It was the goalie's first shootout of the season. He also faced more artillery than the Austin defense usually allows.
McMullen closed the door on three of Corpus Christi's snipers in the shootout, while the Ice Bats got goals from Dan Price, Smart and defenseman Mike Gaffney for a fourth-round victory.
The teams fought and hit up and down the ice all night long, combining for 104 penalty minutes. Midway through the second period, a free-for-all ensued after former Ice Bat Matt Sharuga skirted the edge of McMullen's personal space.
The Bats went on a power play, and Gaffney's pass sent Brett Seguin and Smart zooming up the left side of the offensive zone. Smart took the puck and sneaked into the left circle with a quick shot that zipped past Eddy Skazyk's catching glove, ringing off the right post and into net.
That made it 2-0 Bats at 12:00 of the second. It appeared to be Austin's game when IceRays forward Tobin Praznik's goal was negated by a very tardy high-sticking call, an infraction committed by Praznik himself some 30 seconds earlier.
