A&M-K senior guard gets conference honors

KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville senior guard Lorie Martinez was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Player of the Week for her performance in games last week, the conference announced Monday.
   Martinez, who played in high school at Incarnate Word Academy, averaged 27.5 points a game for the Javelinas in victories over Cameron and Southwestern Oklahoma. She made 21 of 34 shots from the field last week, including 13 of 20 three-pointers.
   In the 94-70 victory over Cameron, she scored 31 points and was seven of 10 from the three-point line.
   It is the first time Martinez has been named the division's top player this year. Earlier this season, Javelinas Precious Thibodeaux and Patrica Lewandowski also were honored.
   The Javelinas are ranked 13th in the NCAA Division II poll.
  
   Lares wins regional amateur boxing championship
   Victor Lares captured the 156-lb. championship at the State Regional Amateur Boxing Championships in Midland this weekend.
   Lares defeated Guadalupe Martinez of Houston to win the title. Ray Armenta received the silver medal when he lost the 165-lb championship bout to Johnny Torres of Houston.
   The South Texas Team, coached by Ralph Davila, won the first-place team trophy at the tournament.
   With his win, Lares advances to the U.S. National Amateur Championships to be held in Colorado Springs, Colo. on March 11.
