Injuries hinder Islanders in loss to San Diego State

Absence of Grayson, Johnson leaves A&M-CC women short-handed in contest against visiting Aztec squad

Turnovers and a lack of rebounding were the real killers for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team in its 67-59 loss to San Diego State on Sunday at Memorial Coliseum, but injuries certainly didn't help either.
The Islanders started the game shorthanded with Rocky Grayson sitting on the bench in street clothes. Grayson suffered a concussion when she banged her head on the court during the Islanders' win over Loyola (Chicago) on Friday. Grayson is likely to return to action for A&M-Corpus Christi's game against Texas-Pan American on Saturday.
To make matters worse, the Islanders lost Detra Johnson early in the second half when she injured her ankle. Johnson, the Islanders' second-leading scorer, was able to play just 10 minutes because of the injury.
"The injuries definitely hurt us," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "Rocky had been playing really well for us before the injury. She makes a lot of hustle plays for us, and we definitely could have used those down the stretch. Losing Detra hurt a lot, too. She's one of our leading scorers, so whenever you take a scorer like that out of your lineup, it's going to hurt you."
THIEVING MONLUX: It didn't take A&M-Corpus Christi guard Jessie Monlux long to reach her career high in steals. Monlux got to that career high by snagging three steals in the first four minutes of the game.
Monlux eventually finished with six steals, the second most every by an Islander.
THE SAME FOR A CHANGE: In 17 games, the Islanders have used 11 different starting lineups. For the first time in more than a month, Estes used the same starting lineup in consecutive games Sunday.
The starting lineup that stuck was Mandie Vinck, Kendra Smith, Kristin Rogers, Monlux and Johnson. It's only the second starting lineup this season to get used more than once.
