Javelinas teams both snag wins

Women beat Cameron, 94-70; men win, 68-66

KINGSVILLE - Guard Lorie Martinez fired in 31 points, including 21 from the 3-point stripe, as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women defeated Cameron, 94-70, in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Thursday night in the Steinke Center.
   A former Incarnate Word Academy standout, Martinez was 12 of 18 from the field, and 7 of 10 at the 3-point arc. It was her best production of the season.
   The Javelinas won 10th game in a row, moving to 12-2 for the year. The squad is ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II.
   Three other Javelinas scored in double figures. Precious Thibodeaux had 19, Ray-ex Pat Lewandowski scored 13 and King-ex Jessica Gamez added 10. Arie Wilson led the team in rebounding with 13.
   Rachel Bacon hit 19 to lead the Cameron (5-5).
   The Javelinas took a 15-point lead at 29-14 with 7 minutes, 27 seconds to play in the first half. But by intermission, Cameron had cut the margin to 42-34.
   It was 47-40 with 17:48 remaining when the Javelinas went on a 10-0 run, and that iced the game. The Javs had their biggest lead at 29, 76-47, midway through the period.
   The Javelinas remain at home to host Southwestern Oklahoma in another LSC crossover contest at 2 p.m. Saturday.

   A&M-Kingsville men upset
  No. 9 Cameron, 68-66

   KINGSVILLE - Billy Brewster hit a layup with 29 seconds left to and Texas A&M-Kingsville upset regionally ranked Cameron, 68-66, in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Thursday night in the Steinke Center.
   The Javelinas led by as many as 11 points in the second half and the only Cameron lead came at 66-65 with 52 seconds remaining.
   Brewster, with an assist from Darren Herrington, got his basket at 29 seconds, and West Oso-ex Quincy Sims added a free throw with 6 seconds on the clock for the final margin.
   The 6-6 Javelinas had led, 28-24, at halftime and throughout the period after Cameron had taken a 2-0 lead in the opening seconds.
   The Aggies (7-2) were ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region this week.
   Sims led the Javelinas with 15 points. James Smith and Herrington had 13 each and Brewster ended with 10. Brewster also led the Javelinas on the boards with eight.
   Brandon Kephart led Cameron with 16 points.
   The Javelinas will be in San Antonio Monday night for a non-conference matchup with St. Mary's.
